FIRST DAY

A frown marred Raven’s forehead as her thoughts wandered to the previous night. Why were they together? Why did she let him stay beside her? What had she done to him such that he didn’t remember her and had become a vampire? And ultimately, what was her goal? A barrage of questions flooded Raven’s mind and the frown creased further into a scowl across her face. Hmm… she did try tracking down every vampire that had escaped that day. But it was difficult when she didn’t know their names or remember their faces. After all, it was the first time she had seen them. Principal Reynolds hadn’t been forthcoming either. “Leave it to the adults,” he had said. And yet, there were no news of them ever since. Her hand unconsciously reached for the side of her abdomen. The wound had healed, thanks to a full night’s rest. Then, she exhaled a heavy sigh. God, why did she promise him that? Finding him was already near to impossible. But finding him again? No, she needed a plan. A foolproof plan that allowed her to find him without raising her suspicions. But more importantly, something that allowed her to track him down, no matter where he was.

Knock. Knock.

The sound of knuckles against a door echoed through the silence of the night.

“Raven, I need to talk to you. Is this a good time?”

“Sure.”

The door swung open and Kevin walked in. He was dressed in his usual black hoodie and joggers. His standard outfit for work. Raven, too, was similarly dressed in a black shirt and leggings as she sat cross-legged on the bed. Twinning in a matching outfit, they looked like a couple going for a run together. In actual fact, they were simply waiting for their shift to begin at midnight. Raven had been looking forward to this day when her punishment was finally over and she could return to arresting those vampires on rampage. But after the encounter yesterday, her mind was filled with thoughts about T and T only.

“Katherine?” Kevin pointed to the empty bed.

“She’s having supper with Charles before the shift.”

“Oh.” With slow steps, Kevin made his way to her bed then sat at the corner. Seconds dragged by as he carefully chose his words. “Raven, I don’t mean to pry but did something happen?”

Raven tore her gaze away from him. Her eyes focusing on the dancing kaleidoscope of light and shadow that the moonlight had beamed down on the crisp white linens.

“You didn’t obey Walter’s command and continued chasing after the fledgling. You walked into a vampire den alone. And what happened when you were patrolling the city last night?” Kevin’s expression softened. “I heard from Katherine that you came back bleeding. Are you feeling better now?”

Again, Raven kept quiet. But she felt a pair of eyes raking her from top to bottom. And she knew that Kevin was checking if she was all right, if the wound had healed.

“I thought we’re a team. I shared everything about myself with you.
